Laser For Nail Fungus
Toe nail fungus is a fungal infection, and is a common condition that begins as a white or yellow spot under the tip of your toe nail. As the fungus penetrates deeper into the toe nail, the fungus may cause your toe nail to:
- crumble around its edges
- become dull in appearance
- separate from the nail bed
- be a source of pain
- emit a foul odour
Toe nail fungus is also referred to as onychomycosis. When it begins to affect the areas between your toes and the skin of your feet, it’s referred to as athletes foot (tinea pedis). Toe nail fungus can affect only one toe nail, or several toe nails at once.
Laser treatment is the newest technology to provide a safe and effective alternative treatment for the symptoms of toe nail fungus, with no adverse side affects! At Active Foot Care Clinic and Orthotic Centre's Hamilton and Brantford locations, we use a Health Canada approved laser (YAG 1064nm) for the treatment of toe nail fungus (it can also be used to treat warts, and scar reduction). A topical or oral anti-fungal medication may also be prescribed.
Typically fungal toe nail laser treatments take one minute per toe nail, with a recommended total of 3 treatments spaced one month apart (patient treatment times and frequencies will vary). The laser treatment of toe nail fungus does not require any needles or anaesthetic, and causes no discomfort. It may take several months for any improvement in the toe nail plate to occur, therefore it’s important to begin treatment as soon as possible, especially if you’re hoping to have clear, healthy toenails in time for wearing open-toed shoes or sandals in the hot summer months!
